Wednesday, in a media statement, we demanded that Kentucky’s Senators, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Rand Paul, along with all other Kentucky elected officials, immediately and clearly condemn President Trump for his intolerable remarks in the aftermath of Charlottesville. Many have called those remarks “unhinged,” as Trump defended white supremacists, Nazis and the alt-right, and asserted a moral equivalency between active racism and those who oppose it.
Trump’s own words convict him as unfit and undeserving of the high office that he occupies, and we must all stand together and demand that our representatives go beyond their previous tepid and generic responses that tacitly accept and excuse his unacceptable words. We demand that they call him out and SAY HIS NAME!
Now a group of ranking House Democrats has announced a Resolution of Censure against President Trump. Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) plan to introduce the resolution “censuring and condemning” the President for his assertion that “both sides” were to blame in the events in Charlottesville. The resolution would also censure Trump for employing top White House aides with ties to white supremacist movements, such as Steve Bannon and Sebastian Gorka. It calls on him to fire “any and all White House advisors who have urged him to cater to the alt-Right movement in the United States.”
“Republicans won’t agree with every word, but now is no time for quibbling,” writes Washington Post political columnist Jennifer Rubin. “This is the test. They lifted this president to office and now they must disown him. The Party of Lincoln will continue, if at all, with those who are willing to condemn their own president for embracing these groups and individuals. Any Republican not willing to sign on should be voted out. Period. It’s the only litmus test that matters.”
The resolution is set to be introduced during the House’s next pro-forma session today and it already has a growing list of Democratic co-sponsors.
HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO: Contact as many of your elected representatives ASAP and urge them in the strongest possible terms to support this Resolution for Censure and, ideally, to call for Trump’s impeachment. Time will be of the essence when the resolution is filed, so please do it quickly, and urge your families, friends and social-media connections to do the same.
