President’s Day Congressional Recess:
Where to Find Mitch McConnell
Because the Senate will be in recess in observance of President’s Day during the week of February 20-24, 2017, most lawmakers will be returning to their districts to meet with constituents and hold town halls. Senator Mitch McConnell, however – despite repeated inquiries from Indivisible Kentucky – has thus far refused to release any details about meeting directly with constituents during his time in Kentucky.
Though his staff has been tight-lipped about his agenda, Senator McConnell is scheduled for at least three luncheons and one dinner while in Kentucky. If you’re free to attend any of these events, we recommend doing so as it may be your only opportunity to meet with one of your two U.S. senators.
On February 21, 2017 Senator McConnell is scheduled to attend a luncheon at the American Legion in Lawrenceburg. As a part of that appearance McConnell will speak as the chamber offers luncheon guests a legislative update.
The luncheon begins at 12:00 PM and is open to the public. To RSVP, contact Chamber President Pam Brough at email@example.com by February 17, 2017. You can additionally reach her by phone at (502) 839-5564 if you have difficulties reaching the chamber by email attempting to confirm your attendance.
If you’re not able to make it into event, you still have an opportunity to make your voice heard. During the luncheon the Kentucky Democratic Party will be holding a rally outside beginning at 11:00 AM.
“We Will Not Be Silenced. We Will Persist,” says the Facebook rally invitation.
The following day, February 22, 2017 Senator McConnell will appear as the keynote speaker at a luncheon in Jeffersontown. The event – scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM – will feature McConnell’s “take on the latest congressional news, and an update on Washington followed by questions from the audience.”
An RSVP is required to attend the event.
For additional information on the luncheon contact Abigail Costello at (502) 267-1674.
If you’re not able to make it into the event, the Kentucky Democratic Party will be holding a rally outside this luncheon as well. In their Facebook invitation to the rally, the KDP states:
Mitch won’t answer phone calls. He runs from us at the airport. He thinks he can silence Sen. Warren and her reading of the Coretta Scott King Letter. He orchestrated the DeVos confirmation. This is the tip of the iceberg.
We are working to #DitchMitch.
Let him know what you think on Fed. 22 in Louisville at 11 am.
Join the NKY & Cincinnati USA Regional Chambers for a discussion about the chambers’ federal legislative priorities. As the new Congress and Administration embark on their first 100 days in office, hear from and engage with regional issue experts about why these issues are important to the region.
The event begins at 11:30 AM at the Hotel Covington. Click through to RSVP or call (859) 578-8800 for additional information.
If you are unable to make it into the event, Indivisible Northern Kentucky and several other organizations will be holding a rally outside beginning at 11:00 AM.
“We would like people to focus on the Affordable Care Act, the EPA, and messages of Inclusion,” the invitation says. “Our messages should be positive endorsements of our shared values (not anti-Trump messages). We want to let Senator McConnell see that if he does not have time for a town hall to meet with us, we will come to him to voice our concerns. This will be a peaceful protest/demonstration.”
The Covington rally event is sponsored by Northern Kentucky Women’s Network, Northern Kentucky Democrats, Northern Kentucky Central Labor Council ALF-CIO, NKY Unites!, United We Stand – Cincinnati, and Northern Kentucky Indivisible.
Finally, on Friday, February 24, 2017 Senator McConnell will appear at a Lincoln Day Dinner thrown by the Jefferson County Republican Party. The event will begin at 6:30 PM at the Ramada Plaza Bluegrass Pkwy in Louisville where McConnell will join Kentucky House Speaker Jeff Hoover and Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers in making speeches. You can obtain tickets to the event here.
If you’re unable to attend the dinner Indivisible Kentucky would like to invite you to join us outside the Ramada for the Hunt4Mitch Rally beginning at 6:00 PM that evening.
We’re asking everyone who is able to attend to wear a red shirt and bring signs to help us get McConnell’s attention. We’ll be focusing on ACA Repeal/Replace, KY Miners’ Health and Pension security, the Muslim Ban, ICE Raids, and an independent investigation into Russian ties with the Trump Administration.
For the moment these four pay-to-play events are the only opportunities Kentucky citizens will have to meet and hear from Senator Mitch McConnell. When Indivisible Kentucky met with McConnell’s state director recently we inquired specifically about town hall meetings multiple times. Each and every time representatives of our organization inquired, Senator McConnell’s director refused to give a definitive answer. Indivisible Kentucky co-founder Kim Hibbard commented:
Throughout our meeting with Senator McConnell’s State Director I asked for a Town Hall several times. The only response was that the Senator is an avid proponent of the 1st Amendment right to peaceful protest and free speech. By the end of the meeting, when I asked for a Town Hall, the only response I got was a smile.
Senator McConnell has long been an avid and vocal supporter of the First Amendment. As fellow believers in those freedoms, we’re asking everyone to attend a rally during McConnell’s time in Kentucky to let him know citizens shouldn’t have to purchase tickets to a luncheon in order to receive face time with their senator.
Show up Kentucky, and bring your signs. Please include #Hunt4Mitch on them and all your social media posts!
